Mining Association of British Columbia

Karina Briño assumed the role of President and CEO of the Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) in August 2011, bringing with her a wealth of experience in the province’s mining sector.

Prior to relocating to Vancouver to lead the MABC team, Ms. Briño was BC’s senior mining bureaucrat, having been appointed Assistant Deputy Minister (ADM), Mines and Mineral Resources Division, in the Ministry of Energy and Mines in 2010.

Over the course of her career, Ms. Briño has held progressively senior positions for the Province of British Columbia. Ms. Briño joined the Ministry of Energy and Mines during development of the Province’s BC Mining Plan, where she became responsible for the first cornerstone of the plan: Communities and First Nations. She then led the implementation of the entire Mining Plan, including implementation of initiatives to address skills shortages and training needs within the industry, and the creation of significant multi-agency partnerships between First Nations, industry, academia, and federal and provincial governments. Ms. Briño received two Premier’s Awards in 2010 for her work on the Reclamation and Prospecting Program as part of her Mining Plan implementation.

Ms. Briño began her career with the Province in social services, providing direct client service primarily to youth at risk and adults with special needs. She then spent several years designing and developing programs aimed at promoting self-reliance and re-attachment to the labour force.

Ms. Briño studied Psychology and Spanish and Latin American Literature at the Universities of British Columbia and Santiago, Chile.  She was a member of the Standards Council of Canada’s Advisory Committee on Social Responsibility, which was established to guide the development of ISO 26000, and is a past board member of the Institute of Public Administration of Canada (IPAC).
