H.H. "Spud" Huestis Award

For Excellence in Prospecting and Mineral Exploration

2012 Recipients: Rob Carne, Bill Wengzynowski and Doug Eaton

Rob Carne, Bill Wengzynowski, and Doug Eaton – the Rau Team of Archer Cathro & Associates (1981) Limited were recognized particularly for their roles in the recent discovery and development of the Rackla Gold Belt in east-central Yukon, comprising two district-scale mineral trends – Nadaleen and Rau. The Nadaleen Trend hosts the only drill-confirmed Carlin-type gold discoveries made in Canada to date.

The Rackla Gold Project encompasses over 1700 square kilometres acquired entirely by staking, and is 100 per cent owned by ATAC Resources Ltd., with exploration programs coordinated by the Archer Cathro consulting firm, presently headed by Eaton, and of which both Carne and Wengzynowski are long-time former senior partners. ATAC made the grassroots discovery in 2006, based on diligent research and targeting of historic gold and pathfinder element geochemical anomalies and mineral occurrences, in a geological setting recognized as being very similar to that which hosts major gold deposits in the northern Carlin Trend, Nevada. Under the leadership of Carne as President of ATAC, the company has proceeded to systematically explore the large claim block with well-planned and executed programs that have generated very impressive results.

Exploration was initially focused in the western portion of the property (Rau Trend), when during the years 2008 to 2010, 25,900 metres of diamond drilling in 132 holes delineated the Tiger Zone replacement style deposit as having NI 43-101 compliant indicated and inferred mineral resources totaling 798,000 ounces gold. In July 2010, a new discovery of true Carlin-type gold mineralization was made by Wengzynowski while prospecting arsenic stream sediment anomalies about 100 km east of the Tiger Deposit. Grab samples from this Osiris Showing, with associated orpiment and realgar, graded between 1.92 and 12.15 g/t Au. The first drill hole on the showing returned an intercept of 65.2 metres grading 4.65 g/t Au. Subsequent aggressive exploration carried out from late 2010 through 2012, including 65,598 metres of diamond drilling, has now identified six zones of substantial Carlin-style mineralization along a 25-km segment of the Nadaleen Trend. Recently published drill results from two of the newly-discovered zones are: 8.51 m of 19.85 g/t Au and 14.86 m of 10.54 g/t Au.

In addition to the Rackla Gold (Rau) Project discoveries, Carne, Wengzynowski and Eaton have been credited or involved with the discovery of several other significant mineral deposits in Yukon since the 1970s. Their perseverance, dedicated work, extensive geological knowledge and technical expertise have enabled them to achieve this outstanding track record and to attract investment capital exceeding $100 million into Yukon mineral exploration.

Eligibility

The Award is open to individuals engaged in any phase of prospecting and mineral exploration, nominated by an AME BC member or member of an associated exploration and/or mining assocation.

Criteria

Winners have made a significant contribution, directly or indirectly, to enhance the mineral resources of British Columbia and/or the Yukon Territory, through the original application of prospecting techniques or other geoscience technology.
