International Indigenous Summit on Energy and Mining - June 26-29 - in Review

Many aboriginals, mineral explorers, developers and educators from BC attended the inaugural and historic International Indigenous Summit on Energy and Mining, Niagara Falls, Ontario - June 26-29, 2011. AME BC's President and CEO, Gavin C. Dirom, held discussions about aboriginal engagement, training and partnerships with representatives from the Assembly of First Nations, BC's First Nation Energy and Mining Council, C3 Alliance, Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada, Mining Association of Canada, International Council on Mining and Metals, Northwest Community College and the Mining Industry Human Resources Council. First Nation leaders spoke of reaching a fair deal or agreements through consultation and accommodation, but stressed that the duty to consult is a legal responsibility of the government, not industry. Open discussions were also held about the importance of treaty making and settling land claims and the lack of clarity for industry regarding the legally non-binding UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the ambiguity surrounding the concept of "free, prior and informed consent". First Nations leaders offered that it does not mean an arbitrary veto power, but rather an approach designed to facilitate consultation and accommodation. Dr. Anthony Hodge, President of the International Council on Mining and Metals was well received as a keynote speaker as he encouraged building strong relationships through active listening and understanding. Pierre Gratton, President and CEO of the Mining Association of Canada emphasized during his short talk that a successful mining industry requires a stable government structure with consistent and predictable implementation of policy and regulations. Dr. Denise Henning, president of Northwest Community College in northwestern BC, also attended the summit with Christine Ogryzlo from Smithers Exploration Group to meet with First Nations leaders and spokespeople from the minerals industry to talk about the School of Exploration & Mining in Smithers. In his opening address to the 700 delegates, Assembly of First Nations National Chief Shawn Atleo referred to the successful Mining Essentials program for Aboriginal Peoples which Northwest Community College piloted for the AFN this winter. Dr. Jim Morin with BCIT's Aboriginal Minerals Training Program attended the summit as well and talked about the benefits he will bring back to the students in programs like the Mining 101 outreach and training prorgam which he recently conducted for AME BC in Lillooett. Additionally, BC Aboriginal Mine Training Association's Executive Director Laurie Sterritt, Chair Laureen Whyte and staff representatives were actively working their booth and sharing their many capacity developing and career building success stories with delegates.

In Memoriam

Doug Bryan Doug Bryan passed away June 15 after a courageous battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s disease). Doug practiced his love of geology in the north for many, many years, and played a major role in the staking, discovery and subsequent development of the Diavik diamond mine. Doug was also a director of the NWT & Nunavut Chamber of Mines for many years, contributing his quiet strength to our efforts to strengthen the mineral exploration and development industry in the north. He will be sorely missed by all in the exploration and mining community that knew him. A memorial was planned for Monday, June 20 in Yellowknife.
