Rain or Shine – Over 300 Kids at BC Mining Week Community Fair

The weather did not keep the kids away from this year’s BC Mining Week Community Fair! Whether panning for gold or stumping the geologist, over 300 children from elementary schools across the Lower Mainland spent the day at the Vancouver Art Gallery learning about minerals and mines. This year, we were also profiled on Shaw TV’s “The Express.” Check out the video here; forward the video to the 3:30 mark for our excerpt. The BC Mining Week Community Fair was created by the Mineral Resources Education Program of BC (MREPBC) in partnership with AME BC and is supported by sponsorship acquired through Partners in Mining, the BC Mining Week Committee. Individuals, groups and organizations from our own mining community brought displays, demonstrations and activities that highlighted mineral exploration, the mining process, reclamation, and the role of minerals in every day life. Lower Mainland elementary school students were invited, as was the general public, to participate in a variety of activities designed to build better understanding of the importance of mining and the relevance of mineral resources in daily life. A special thank you to the over 50 industry volunteers who came out to support this event. If you would like to get involved for next year’s Community Fair, please contact Sheila Stenzel (MREPBC) at Stenzel@bcminerals.ca.

Recommendations from BC’s Mineral Explorers, Miners and Suppliers to Reduce Red Tape

| Letter to the Red Tape Reduction Commission
March 31, 2011 The following recommendations to reduce red tape are provided to you by the Association for Mineral Exploration BC (AME BC), Mining Association of BC (MABC) and the Mining Suppliers Association of BC (MSABC). Collectively, the BC mining industry is a significant financial driver, contributing over $7 billion annually to our provincial GDP. It is responsible for 14,000 direct mining jobs, an additional 35,000 indirect jobs in supporting activities, with total inferred employment in excess of 85,000. There are currently 20 major mines, over 30 industrial mineral producers and 2 smelters operating in BC and we are well positioned for future growth. Three major mines are being constructed, six major mines are in advanced development, and over eighteen mining projects are in earlier stages of environmental assessment. With $6 billion in private sector investment and thousands of new jobs at stake, federal regulations that impact mining should be unambiguous and effective. On behalf of AME BC, MABC and MSABC, we believe that the Red Tape Reduction Commission should consider the following recommendations to ensure that regulations related to mining and exploration activities do not have an unintended consequence or negatively impact the industry performance thereby hindering economic development opportunities in both rural and urban areas. | NWCC Wins Mining and Sustainability Award |

Northwest Community College’s (NWCC) School of Exploration & Mining (SEM) has been recognized as an industry leader in promoting sustainable development within British Columbia’s mining sector. The Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) presents the award annually to honour those committed to advancing and promoting sustainable development in BC’s mining sector. “The Environmental Monitor Assistant Program at NWCC’s School of Exploration & Mining provides innovative training that focuses on sustainable development and environmental excellence,” says NWCC President Dr. Denise Henning. “We are very proud that EMAP is being recognized by both the industry and the province as a success. The school is committed to those core concepts while it develops programs to prepare First Nations and other northerners as the industry’s next generation of employees.” The Mining and Sustainability Award is a joint initiative between the Mining Association of British Columbia (MABC) and the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources. The award provides MABC the opportunity to publicly recognize the diverse companies, communities, First Nations, non-governmental organizations, government agencies and individuals committed to advancing and promoting sustainable development in the B.C. mining sector. “As the mining sector embarks on a period of growth not seen in a generation, it is more important than ever to find new and better ways to dig the minerals that are critical to a clean and green economy out of the ground,” said Pierre Gratton, President and CEO of the Mining Association of BC. “This award is intended to celebrate those new and better ways, and it is an honour to recognize this year’s recipients for their leadership.” NWCC’s School of Exploration & Mining continues to rack up the awards. In the past three years, SEM’s industry specific training programs have been recognized with a number of prestigious awards, including the 2009 & 2010 Northern BC Business & Technology’s Sustainability Award, as well as the 2010 Premier’s Innovation and Excellence Award from the Province of BC. The award was presented at a special event in Smithers during BC’s Mining Week, May 16-20, 2011.

Geoscience BC Receives a $12 Million Commitment for Public Geoscience in BC

On May 10, 2011 at the BC Mining Week Opening Reception in Vancouver, Geoscience BC thanked the provincial government for its commitment of $12 million in new funding to support mineral and energy geoscience in British Columbia. "This investment will allow Geoscience BC to continue delivering programs aimed at stimulating new economic activity in British Columbia," said Dr. 'Lyn Anglin, President and CEO of Geoscience BC. "New funding enables Geoscience BC to continue to develop our QUEST programs, including the recently announced QUEST-Northwest project, which contribute to the public geoscience framework in support of the BC mineral exploration industry." "In addition, this new funding will also enable Geoscience BC to continue the water sourcing work we've undertaken over the last two years in Northeast BC, which is critical to enabling the significant natural gas opportunity in that part of the province," said Anglin. Established with a $25-million investment from the Province in 2005, Geoscience BC is an industry-led, not-for-profit organization that conducts exploration geoscience in partnership with industry, academia, government, First Nations and communities. Geoscience BC received an additional $11.7 million in 2008 to support mineral geoscience in Mountain Pine Beetle-affected areas and oil & gas geoscience in frontier areas of the province. Past Geoscience BC initiatives include the QUEST, QUEST-West and QUEST-South programs, which led to increased mineral staking and exploration in BC's interior. The QUEST-Northwest project, launched in late April in Stewart, is Geoscience BC's latest mineral geoscience initiative. Geoscience BC also has two ongoing projects in the Horn River Basin and Montney play in Northeast BC, focused on increasing understanding of water sources in advance of development.
