1-PEOPLE
AT WORK: We want to see people with their tools! We want to see people
active and involved, digging in the BC dirt for samples, hammering the
rocks, reading maps, and using GPS devices. Tell the human side of the
exploration story through your lenses.
2-EXPLORATION SCENERY:
BC’s landscape is gorgeous, but true to the heart of every prospector,
explorationist, miner, and mineral exploration supporter, what a
beautiful sight it is to see exploration happening on that landscape. We
want to see your beautiful scenery shots, may they be mountains,
waterfalls, valleys and forests, but those incorporating people involved
in exploration, prospecting, and drilling, well, magnificent! Show us
your passion for responsible exploration in the areas where you operate.
3-ANIMALS,
MINERALS, HARMONY: BC is full of amazing wildlife and as part of AME
BC’s commitment to responsible exploration, minimizing impact to the
animals around us is important. For this category we want to see those
fantastic shots of bears and wolves and everything in between! Showcase
how mineral exploration can co-exist with wildlife peacefully and
beautifully.
4-HEALTH & SAFETY: AME BC recognizes that health
and safety are fundamental cornerstones of the mineral exploration
sector and encourages the promotions of sound and responsible business
practices to ensure everyone’s right to a healthy and safe workplace. In
this category we want to see photographs depicting your best safety
efforts and how you ensure that everyone around “has a safe day,
everyday”. Click here for more information on the categories, guidelines and rules. |

| BC Releases Report on the Budget 2012 Consultations |
| |
| On November 15, 2011, the Select Standing Committee on Finance Government Services submitted 75 recommendations for consideration in the 2012/13 provincial budget that will be released on February 21, 2012.
The mineral exploration and mining sector was well represented in budget hearings; AME BC , Geoscience BC, the Mining Association of BC, and the Smithers Exploration Group made presentations. At least 10 recommendations are relevant to the mineral exploration sector – a recognition of the importance of mining to the BC economy and tax base. Below are 10 recommendations that are most relevant to AME BC members.
The Committee recommends to the Legislative Assembly that the provincial government:
Streamlining Permitting Processes and Regulations
1. Develop and implement an effective, efficient, and transparent permitting review process, and ensure that government agencies have sufficient resources.
2. Provide more certainty to business applicants about what is expected from them with regard to First Nations consultations and clarify what government takes responsibility for.
4. Work with all sectors and the Industry Training Authority to enhance and target apprenticeship opportunities.
5. Emphasize the development of innovative programs with high schools, colleges, industry, and labour that can successfully recruit and train students who may not be able to finish high school requirements for trades training in a traditional system; and increase efforts in trades training for women, Aboriginal people, older and disabled workers.
6. In recognition of the impending shortage of educated and skilled workers, work with industries in the Northeast and Northwest regions, and regional colleges to work effectively together to ensure there is accurate and well-publicized local market information for young people and flexible, responsive training programs at a cost students can afford.
9. Provide core funding to the Northwest Community College’s award-winning School of Exploration and Mining program.
10. Provide funding for skilled regional geologists to allow them to carry out fieldwork for the development of new mining opportunities.
11. Maintain adequate funding for Geoscience BC.
12. Ask BC Hydro to conduct negotiations with the private sector and to consult with local residents on the possible extension of the Northwest Transmission Line north from Bob Quinn Lake.
14. Develop rail transportation and supply chain infrastructure to enhance export capacities for port terminals in the northwest and in the lower mainland, particularly for metallurgical coal.

Geoscience BC Launches a New Project in the East Kootenays |
| |
| Wednesday, November 16, 2011 - Geoscience BC, in partnership with the East Kootenay Chamber of Mines, is pleased to announce the launch of the SEEK (Stimulating Exploration in the East Kootenays) Project. The goal of the SEEK Project is to increase economic activity related to mineral exploration by acquiring, compiling and adding value to public and private sector mineral exploration information.
"There are many indications of significant undiscovered potential and under-explored prospects in the East Kootenays," said Ross Stanfield, President of the East Kootenay Chamber of Mines. "The SEEK Project will help attract interest to our area and provide new information on mineral potential to support and increase exploration activity and investment and hopefully lead to new discoveries and developments in the region."
The East Kootenays have a long and successful history of mineral exploration and mining. One of the world's largest lead-zinc mines, the former Sullivan Mine, sustained the economy of Kimberley and the East Kootenay region for almost 100 years. The initial phase of the SEEK Project will capitalize on the region's rich exploration history, concentrating on compiling existing mineral prospect and exploration information with a particular focus on capturing knowledge from local prospectors and exploration geologists. This local knowledge represents invaluable information that is not yet in the public domain.
"The component of the SEEK Project to capture local exploration knowledge represents an innovative approach to increasing the mineral information database in the public geoscience record," said 'Lyn Anglin, President and CEO of Geoscience BC. "The wealth of information that resides in the local exploration community is an invaluable resource and we look forward to the results of the SEEK Project as a test case of this type of approach."
A major project goal is to attract new interest in East Kootenay exploration projects. To help accomplish this, project results will be highlighted and distributed with new marketing materials that target investors and active exploration companies. In addition, it is anticipated that this project will identify future geoscience and mineral exploration research projects that will further contribute to economic development in the region.
Dr. Russell Hartlaub, faculty member in the Department of Mining and Mineral Exploration at BCIT, will manage all activities as project coordinator. He will be working closely with Geoscience BC staff and the East Kootenay Chamber of Mines to deliver this project. Geoscience BC's Minerals Technical Advisory Committee will provide technical oversight on the project. More details on specific project activities will be posted as they become available at www.geosciencebc.com.
