| AME BC Speaker Series Event “Enabling Development – Reconciling Values” a Success! |
| |
| There was a room-filling audience for AME BC’s April 30 luncheon at the Sutton Place Hotel. Guests of Honor at this session of the AME BC Speaker Series were the Honorable George Abbott, Minister of Aboriginal Relations and Reconciliation, and Gwaans (Beverley Clifton Percival), Member and Negotiator for the Gitxsan Hereditary Chiefs and Chair of the B.C. All Chiefs’ Task Force. The title of the session: Enabling Development – Reconciling Values. Minister Abbott lauded AME BC’s work; he said he met often with Gavin Dirom, President and CEO, and Laureen Whyte, Vice President, Sustainability and Operations. He was a big fan of the mining industry and bullish on its future. The industry employs 28,000 people, he said, and is the largest private-sector employer of aboriginal people. Half of the province’s First Nations people were younger than 26, so a special effort had to be made to bring them into the province’s economy. Gwaans began her talk with a greeting in the Gitxsan language. The word “decisions” occurred many times in her brief address. “We want to achieve decision making,” she said. “We don’t want to stand in the way of development, we want to take part in development. We are willing to engage in local government and take part in the decisions that are made.” And First Nations people want to share in the benefits, too. Both speakers referred to the Northwest Transmission Line project, and were in favor of it. The event was a great success and earned warm applause. AME BC would like to sincerely thank the premier sponsors of the 2009/2010 Series, Heenan Blaikie, Rescan: Engineers and Scientists; the TMX Group, and Wardrop, a Tetra Tech Company, as well as partner sponsor, KPMG LLP. | We Need Your Help - Discourage the passage of Bill C-300 |
| |
| AME BC continues to work with the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada and other industry associations to discourage the passage of Bill C-300, An Act Respecting Corporate Accountability for the Activities of Mining, Oil or Gas in Developing Countries. Shortly before the federal government launched its corporate social responsibility initiative for the extractives sector in March of 2009, Liberal member of Parliament, John McKay tabled a private members bill – C-300 – to penalize Canadian companies operating overseas for failure to comply with certain unspecified standards of practice. See our position paper and other information about Bill C-300 and its potential to harm our sector. Click here for the PDAC submission to the federal government and an informational email to their members. We are fully committed to responsible exploration and mining development, and are contributing to a number of local, national and international projects and initiatives to enhance the value that our sector can offer to communities while minimizing impacts to them and the environment. Please act now! Here, you will find helpful materials and suggestions for contacting Members of Parliament to explain the serious harm this Bill would do to our sector - and importantly to our ability to continue to work in partnership with government, host countries and willing non-profit organizations. For more information, contact Laureen Whyte, Vice President, Sustainability & Operations 604.630.3928 or lwhyte@amebc.ca |

| Horn River Basin Subsurface Aquifer Project — Early Public Release of Phase I Data |
| |
| Geoscience BC has announced, in partnership with the Horn River Basin Shale Gas Producers Group and the B.C. Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources, the early public release of Phase I Data of the Horn River Basin Subsurface Aquifer Project. "The Horn River Basin is one of North America's premier shale gas opportunities, with the potential to stimulate economic activity and create local jobs," said Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources Minister Blair Lekstrom. "The results of this project will be used by shale gas producers, regulators, communities and First Nations to develop B.C.'s resources while significantly reducing the surface environmental footprint and helping to protect surface fresh water." In October 2008, Geoscience BC announced a $5 million program to undertake geoscience studies in the Horn River Basin, focused on identifying and evaluating deep geological water sources for shale gas production. The $3.5 million Phase I research was supported by $5 million of in-kind contributions from the Horn River Basin Producers Group to provide confidential data from their drilling activities for Geoscience BC to analyze and interpret. Geoscience BC releases its research results to the public after an appropriate confidentiality period for project partners. Phase I data was originally scheduled to be released in early July 2010. However, the Horn River Basin Producers Group endorsed an early public release of the data. "The Horn River Basin Producers Group was extremely pleased to support the Horn River Basin Deep Aquifer Project to identify potential subsurface water sources," said Rob Spitzer, Chair of the Horn River Basin Producers Group. "We fully endorsed making this information available as soon as possible to support the responsible development of the Horn River Basin." Phase I results include: - A Horn River Basin stratigraphic framework for hydrogeological and deep aquifer analysis.
- Aquifer and fluid data from deep water wells that may be used for water source and fluid disposal.
- Systematic hydrogeological investigation of potential aquifers in the Horn River Basin to quantify and map reservoir capacity and productivity / injectivity potential.
"Geoscience BC is extremely pleased to support the priority research needs of both industry and government through this innovative collaborative approach to geoscience research," said Dr. 'Lyn Anglin, President and CEO of Geoscience BC. "The result of Phase I research will help contribute to cost-effective and environmentally sound development of British Columbia's unconventional gas resources." Phase II research priorities are being developed and will be announced when finalized. The Horn River Basin shale gas producers group consists of the major industry players, which are Apache, ConocoPhilips, Devon, Encana EOG Resources, Imperial Oil, Nexen, Pengrowth, Quicksilver, Stone Mountain Resources and Suncor. The purpose of the group is to facilitate cooperation and communication between major industry players, key stakeholders and First Nations in the area.
