AME BC and PDAC Congratulate National Health & Safety Award Winners
Vancouver, B.C. – January 17, 2011 – The Association for Mineral Exploration British Columbia (AME BC) and the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) today congratulated the recipients of the Safe Day Everyday Gold Award and Safe Day Everyday Awards. The Safe Day Everyday Gold Award will be presented at the Health & Safety Awards Breakfast at Mineral Exploration Roundup 2011 on January 26 and the Mineral Outlook Luncheon at PDAC 2011 in Toronto on March 7. The Safe Day awards recognize safety performance excellence of companies, geological surveys, and other organizations active in mineral exploration in Canada.
“These national awards recognize companies, government geological surveys, and independent contractors that have successfully implemented a culture of health and safety within their organizations,” said William Mercer, Chair of the Health & Safety Committee of the PDAC. “We encourage all companies to have a safe day, everyday, in all of their activities,” said Rob Pease, Chair of the Health & Safety Committee of AME BC. “Health and safety form a cornerstone of responsible exploration, and these awards recognize exemplary performance in our industry.”
Award Recipients
The Safe Day Everyday Gold Award recipient is FNX Mining Company Inc., which attained 99,792 hours (12,474 days) without a lost time incident throughout 2009. This work included underground exploration at the Levack, McCreedy West, Podolsky, and Falconbridge properties and surface drilling at the Podolsky, Victoria, and Kirkwood properties. John Everest, Manager, Sudbury Exploration, for Quadra FNX Mining Ltd. commented, “We've put a lot of effort into defining and managing the safety culture at FNX Mining, now Quadra FNX, in order to reduce first aid, medical aid, and lost-time incidents among our employees and contractors. This award is definitely a great honour for us especially as it has been won twice during intense drilling campaigns, the first of which was the discovery and definition of the Morrison Deposit in 2005, and now the discovery of the Victoria project in 2008-2009.”
FNX Mining Company Inc. was the recipient of the first nationwide Safe Day Everyday Gold Award (then called the Annual Safety Award) in 2005. The Exploration Division of De Beers Canada Inc. received the award for 2006 and 2007, and Northgate Minerals Corporation received the award for 2008.
AME BC and PDAC also congratulate the 98 recipients of the Safe Day Everyday Award. These companies reported no lost workday incidents throughout 2009. Of these, there are 33 repeat winners, 16 three-year recipients, 9 four-year recipients and 2 five-year recipients.
