Jim Morin

Jim Morin was born in St. Boniface, Manitoba of Métis ancestry. He followed a geology path through the University of Manitoba and obtained his PhD from the University of Saskatchewan. Early geological experience was in the Canadian Shield, and from 1975 to 1987 he was involved with Department of Indian Affairs and Northern Development in Whitehorse, Yukon. For the next ten years, he worked as a geologist with INCO Limited on mineral exploration projects primarily in western North America. He made a switch into teaching at the post-secondary level in 1999 with the Institute of Indigenous Government in Vancouver, where he taught a wide variety of courses and mentored numerous Aboriginal students.

Through education, he has rediscovered his Aboriginal heritage and celebrates it with his teaching. He has been part-time teaching at Langara College in Aboriginal Studies since 2003, though his main effort is now with BCIT in the Mining Technology Program. There, he is heading up an initiative to develop an Aboriginal Minerals Training Program that is co-sponsored by AME BC. The program’s goal is to effectively engage Aboriginal people in training and participating in the minerals sector workforce in British Columbia.
