Natural Resources Canada Library - Vancouver is a specialized scientific/technical library that supports the educational and research goals of Geological Survey of Canada (Pacific) and to a broader extent the mining industry in Vancouver. With over 50,000 thematic maps, 100,000 volumes and over 250 e-journals, Diane will give us an overview of the services available from NRCan Library.

Welcome to back to a new season of the WIM Brown Bag series. Hope everyone had a fantastic summer. Our theme for this year is “Industry Connections and Resources”. We’ll learn more about resources that are out there for industry, as well as meet and connect with other “Women in industry” groups.

Event Summary: Courtnay will provide a brief overview of MiHR and the resources available to both career seekers and industry professionals, as well as outlining ways that WIM members can get involved in attracting and retaining diversity for the industry. Courtnay is also completing her graduate studies in the Mining Engineering department at UBC on gender and career advancement in the mining industry, and she will be presenting her research study on Highly Qualified Women in the industry, and ways for WIM members to get involved in this exciting research!

Geoscience BC has traditionally supported WIM by hosting a networking lunch and we enjoyed their hospitality once again this June. During this networking lunch, we launched WIM’s Run for the Cure. A representative from the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation, BC/Yukon Region gave a brief presentation.

Women In Mining cordially invited you to join them during BC Mining Week at the Gala Reception taking place on Thursday, May 12, 2011 at the Marriott Pinnacle Hotel, 1128 West Hastings Street.
All proceeds went to Mining for Miracles, BC’s Mining Industry Fundraiser in support of BC Children’s Hospital.
May 11, 2011 - “Go To Bat with Team WIM Bake Sale”
All proceeds went to the Mining for Miracles, BC’s Mining Industry Fundraiser in support of BC Children’s Hospital.
It was Team Women in Mining's First Year of Batting Up at the Slo Pitch Tournament on Saturday, May 28th.
The total sale of baked goods was matched by a few companies in the Mining Industry. All leftover goods/ beverages were donated to the Community Angel Food Runners Program; your contribution benefited both the Food Bank and the BC Children’s Hospital.

Speaker Bio: Christine Etherington has worked in the financial industry for the past 9 years. She is a member of Advocis - the Financial Advisors Association of Canada. She is also a financial advisor with London Life, and is currently studying for her Certified Financial Planner (CFP) designation.

Did you know that ovarian cancer is considered the most deadly gynecologic cancer and that there is no early detection test available? The purpose of the presentation was to raise awareness about the signs, symptoms, risks and preventive factors of the disease among the health professional community. Education and awareness are the best tools we have for improving survival.

Women in Mining Canada invited the global mining community to attend the 4th Annual Women in Mining International Networking Reception. This interactive event was a platform to learn from your peers, share knowledge and experiences, build relationships and create new business contacts. Many joined the women and men who represent a wide variety of professional skills spanning the entire spectrum of the minerals and mining sector. Students and junior professionals were welcomed to attend and had the opportunity to interact with many senior role models and industry leaders.

Sahar gave us an overview of the various InfoMine websites and show their newest products and services. Attendees participated in the question and answer session.

Women in Mining have been supporting The Townships Project since 2008. The Townships Project has been supporting microfinance in South Africa since 1999. Individuals planning to be in South Africa on February 9, 2011, were invited to attend a reception to introduce the Canadian and South African mining communities to MicroFranchising.

Patty Moore of Mining Suppliers' Association of British Columbia presented a talk on the importance of, and value in becoming involved with, career-related associations, and introduce us to a few of the key mining and mineral exploration associations active in Canada. She also let us know what all these acronyms stand for!
