CIM WIM Forum and Reception, May 11, 2010

The CIM Women in Mining Forum was held at the Vancouver Convention Centre. It was well attended with at least 200 seated in the audience at the Forum.

After a traditional First Nations Opening Blessing by Squamish Elder Faye Halls, the Forum was moderated by ‘Lyn Anglin, President and CEO Geoscience BC. Keynote speaker Barbara Caelles, Geologist, Caelles Geological Consultants, gave a summary, some time references and milestones of Mining Women’s Groups in Canada. Forum speakers spoke about their experiences in the Mining Industry and about their different career paths.

 

In speaking order, the panellists were: 

  • Courtney Mitchell, CSM Consulting Geologist, now writing safety manuals
  • Carol Ellis, PI Financial Corp, Geologist, Investment banking Professional
  • Judi L’Orsa, Smither`s Exploration Group, Geologist, grant administrator for Northwest Community College (NWCC) School of Exploration and Mining
  • Julie Gelfand, Mining Association of Canada, Vice-president of Sustainable Development
  • Karla Mills, Wardrop Engineering Inc. Engineer and Project Manager
  • Sophie Bergeron, Xstrata Nickel, Mining Engineer, currently Superintendent of Continuous Improvement
 

 

 

 

       

Women in Mining Forum Speakers
It was interesting to notice the diversity in terms of generations, and how their perception of the industry has varied through the years. The one common thread however, was their dedication, passion and love of their chosen careers in mining related fields.

   
Vancouver Women in Mining Reception
 
The Annual Vancouver WIM Reception was held immediately following the Forum. The Master of Ceremonies was Sean Waller, Chair, CIM 2010 Conference. After some brief remarks, to the 250 attendees, he introduced Claire Thomson who thanked our Sponsor Roca Mines Inc., and introduced Bob Chambers of Roca Mines. The Reception speaker Maryse Belanger, Director, Technical Services, Goldcorp, gave a very interesting and inspiring talk on "Sustainable Prosperity".
